Watershed Monitoring

HPWA monitors the condition of our watersheds as part of our EPA 319 grants in the Gallinas & Mora Watersheds.  Monitoring has focused on scientifically credible monitoring done by paid staff, contractors, or interns to track water quality impairments (e.g. temperature, nutrients), vegetation, and river channel condition.

HPWA currently leads three national Citizen Science efforts locally: the Christmas Bird Count, International Migratory Bird Day Count, and North American Butterfly Association counts. These efforts have been fun, informative, contribute to national monitoring efforts and are good for community outreach and education.  Theyhave largely been organized by volunteers.

We intend to expand on our Citizen Science, watershed condition monitoring efforts in the future.
